Tiling Pattern – Designing Your Floor Installation

What tiling pattern should you use? There are many popular tiling patterns and floor designs to choose from. Some designs include brickwork patterns. Let’s consider what some of the different designs entail.

Brickwork Tiling Pattern

You can achieve this tiling pattern simply by sliding every alternate row of tiles over to half the length of the tile above it. Using rectangular tiles will add to the effect. This generally requires the same number of tiles as the basic grid pattern. You may use this pattern when laying timber look porcelain tiles. However, tile manufacturers recommend that the offset should be a maximum of 20% of the length of a tile.

Many also refer to this tile pattern as a diamond pattern. They say this pattern helps hide flaws in a room’s shape, particularly if the walls are slightly off-angle. To create this design, simply turn the standard square tiles on a diagonal to the room’s walls. Lay the tiles out on the floor, dividing the room into four sections. Generally, when doing the standard grid design, you would draw a large “plus” sign from mid-wall to mid-wall. With the diagonal design, however, you will need to draw a big “X” from corner to corner.

One thing that is good to note is that diagonal patterns will require more tiles because they will need to be cut to fit against the walls. This will also require extra time, which in turn means extra money unless this will be a “do it yourself” job. As with all tile floor design installations, start at the middle and work outwards.
